Watercress Darter Art Contest
“Protecting Our Watercress Darter”
Contest Guidelines:
Elementary (4K-4th grade) and Middle / Junior High ( 5th – th grade ) school students in the Birmingham City district are invited to enter the 1st Annual Watercress Darter Fish Festival 2011 Art Contest .
The Freshwater Land Trust has committed to giving cash prizes to winning students and their classrooms in the following way:
1st Prize – $750 for Student /$750 for Classroom
2nd Prize – $500 for Student / $500 for Classroom
3rd Prize – $250 for Student /$250 for Classroom
Students/Individuals Category: T-shirt Design Contest
- T-shirts will be white.
- Artists are allowed to use only four colors in their art work.
- The theme for the 2011 Festival is “Protecting our Watercress Darter”
- No computer drawings are allowed.
- Drawings must be on paper which is 8.5″ x 11″.
- Only 1 entry per student.
- Entrants must attend schools located in Birmingham city limits.
- Previous T-shirt contest winners are ineligible.
- Students MUST put the following on the back of their drawing in pencil to be eligible to win:
- First and Last name
- Age
- Telephone number
- School and Grade
- If applicable, the teacher’s name
Team/Classroom Category: Sculpture Contest
Teacher and his/her class may enter as a group to create a Sculpture of the Watercress Darter.
1. Sculptures may not exceed 2 feet wide by 2 feet long by 2 feet tall and be self-supporting – able to stand on their own when displayed. If the sculpture must hang, the hanging mechanism must be supplied – nothing can hang on the walls.
2. Please do not use wood for the base – makes structure very heavy to transport.
3. All materials used must be clean, free of food remains or dirt.
4. All parts of the sculpture must be securely attached. Glue, tape, string, wire, and thread is permitted.
5. Non-recyclable materials may be used, but at least 25% of the materials must be common household recyclables such as aluminum cans, junk mail, tin cans, steel cans, plastics (#1 & #2), newspaper, cardboard, & cereal boxes. Absolutely no alcoholic beverage containers.
Judges will want to see the actual recyclables and other materials used in the sculpture.
6. Be creative. Reuse items like old craft pom poms, or cut up packaging peanuts, CD’s or egg cartons
7. All sculptures must have a title. Be creative. Use adjectives to describe in your
title. “The Watercress Darter” could be “Found (object) Fish; A Wonderful Watercress Darter.”
8. All sculptures must have the following information on a card attached to the sculpture
9. Each sculpture must have a listing of the recyclables used and their number.
10. Students should also list what non-recyclable items are included in their sculpture.

Each school selects a first, second and third place winner in both the Team/Class and

Submit your art:
The art work for the first, second, and third place winners for your school in the Individual T-shirt Design category should be submitted no later than April 1st.

A photo of the first, second, third place winners for your school in the Team/Classroom Sculpture category can be mailed with the Individual Designs or a high resolution .jpeg of the chosen three sculptures can be emailed to also by April 1st to: Laurie@artworksalabama.com
The final T-Shirt will be available for purchase at the 1st Annual Watercress Darter Festival Proceeds go towards preservation efforts for our Watercress Darter fish.
